Share your energy with the electricity community
WattKeeper links the homes of a local electricity community (in French, a Communauté Électrique Locale, or CEL), so a sunny roof’s extra power finds a neighbour who can use it.
What it does
- Each home publishes its solar surplus automatically.
- Neighbours reserve that power, from one home or several, for instance to charge a car.
- Every home has its own tamper-proof digital identity, recognised by the community’s administrator.
- A community dashboard shows who is online, what is on offer and what is reserved.
- The system measures how well each home keeps its commitments.
- Sharing can follow fixed time slots, from 5 to 60 minutes, or run continuously.
How it works
- The administrator creates the communityOnce, from the Azure portal in a web browser. Nothing to install on their computer.
- Each member joinsThey install WattKeeper in Home Assistant and send the administrator their home’s ID and public key.
- The administrator approves the homeThey send back an access key, which the member pastes into Home Assistant.
- Homes start sharingProducers offer their surplus automatically. Neighbours reserve it when they need it.
Good to know
- Someone has to be the administrator. They create the community once and approve each new home.
- The shared data lives in an Azure storage account, which costs a few cents a month.
- Your home only makes outgoing connections, so there is nothing to open on your router.
- The guide on GitHub is written in French.
- This is an independent project with an MIT licence. Use it at your own risk.
